 Holiday died at 44 more than six decades ago, yet the racism that permeated her repeated brushes with the U.S. government still persists in the experiences of many Black drug users (who, even in 2021, are incarcerated at dramatically higher rates than their white counterparts for drug-related offenses). The portion of Holiday’s story that is told onscreen can’t encompass the totality of her life, but it can increase our empathy with people experiencing drug addiction whose narratives don’t look like the ones we’ve been taught to valorize.

“Imagine if the government chased sick people with diabetes, put a tax on insulin and drove it into the black market, told doctors they couldn’t treat them, and then caught them, prosecuted them for not paying their taxes, and then sent them to jail. If we did that, everyone would know we were crazy. Yet we do practically the same thing every day in the week to sick people hooked on drugs. The jails are full and the problem is getting worse every day,” Holiday wrote in her 1956 autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues. All that Holiday asked was to be seen as a person suffering from a disease, but the infrastructure that governs U.S. drug policy wasn’t equipped to offer her, or any other person struggling with drug addiction, that small mercy.
